ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Through waters chartered blindly, dusk moves in. Sunlight narrows as quiet grows louder, the red light grows along the shadows.

Heather Kakert, a South Carolina based artist, jewelry designer and architect makes abstract paintings to carve pathways that explore the threshold between art and architecture. She grew up in the Midwest and has been practicing architecture for 20 years. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University, spending a semester studying art and architecture in Rome, Italy. Before studying architecture, she worked in Isabel Bloom's art studio as a finisher for the artist's concrete garden sculptures. In 2007, she entered her mother in a contest to design a t-shirt for J Jill. Her mother won and they ended up on a trip to Carmel, California where they took Lauryn Taylor’s abstract workshop. She had worked with watercolor during college, but after the California workshop, she could not stop painting. Heather's work has been shown at Chait Gallery, MidCoast Gallery and various private institutions. She has been in group shows for Venus Envy, Metal Mindset, ADOT and solo show at Blank Canvas Studio-Gallery. She also collaborates on STEAM projects through an organization she started called TEKK Builders to connect youth with art, design and science. Heather’s art started in landscape, but lines made their way in influenced by her architectural background. When she would sketch architectural concepts, she would not erase any lines, She would sketch new ideas over the old. The complexity that developed is interesting and fuels the final design. This collision of ideas translated to her painting and is also what draws her attention in natural environments. Architecture is very much about dealing with the elements and being aware of how nature reacts to man made and natural disasters, documenting this awareness of the collision is important in her artwork.
