The Dianthus called “Nadeshiko” in Japan used to bloom in our family garden every summer, and I found it so pretty. Initially, I produced this work in 2008, however, as often happens, I wasn’t satisfied with its quality as my line hatching technique improved and progressed. I touched in for years and could complete the work in 2012. This work was featured in the exhibition “I Wandered…“ at Rydal Mount in 2015 for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the final publication of Wordsworth's poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" known as "Daffodils". This is my interpretation of the concept of the Still Life genre and to enhance the concept, I painted a ladybird in the middle of the flowers as the Dutch old masters used to paint various insects alongside the flowers and plants to convey the message of “memento mori (remember your mortality)” through their beauty and ephemerality. Both Dianthus and ladybird are pretty to look at, but the pretty flowers and plants are often eaten by these lovely tiny creatures and wither away after the season, while the tiny bug is also short-lived. Yet life goes and the sun also rises. Hence, the title “Warming Sun”.

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
