About The Artwork

The Fragments of Life Series of abstract paintings began in 2014 and continues to evolve today. Each of these painting is an echo of my own personal evolution and life journey. I begin with a blank white sheet of roughly textured 23” x 30” 300 pound water colour paper, a palette knife, some heavy body acrylic paint mixed with gel medium and the compelling need to create. In the beginning I often don’t know what the painting is about. As the process evolves, I learn about the painting and myself. Each painting can be a culmination of up to 20-30 layers added and taken away, taking anywhere from a week to several months per painting to reach completion. During this time I am in a relationship with this piece and learn its meaning and significance, understanding what the painting has to teach me and show me. Often there is contradiction and tension - fuel for the creative fire. The blending and glazing of colours, the scratching and removing of paint to reveal under colours, the embedding of collage ephemera, the use of pencil and conte markings and scribblings all expressions of feelings of the beauty and the pain, the freedom and the frustration, the evolution and feelings of being stuck all encompassed in this journey of life. These are the fragments of my life.

Deb Chaney is a contemporary abstract artist, speaker, & workshop facilitator.  Self taught, with a background in Earth and Ocean Sciences, she began her artistic journey after taking a number of workshops with artists whom she'd admired, and then selling and exhibiting her work at outdoor fairs and cafes.  She's been named by Vancouver City Buzz and Culture Trip as one of the top 10 contemporary artists to watch in Vancouver. Recently, her work was chosen to be reproduced in 3-D to be sold and distributed worldwide through Arius Technologies in Vancouver, BC. Her artwork is held in private collections world-wide and in corporate collection such as the Hilton Hotel. Featured in Style At Home Magazine, The Georgia Strait, thrice on the homepage for Saatchi Online Gallery, in Rainmaker Films, Telus TV and in TV Commercials, she is currently represented by D2Art and Sala Interiors in Los Angeles. Her painting process often begin with a palette knife in hand, sometimes a question in mind, and the curiosity of mixing new paint colours. Hours, days and sometimes months later, after applying and taking away layers of mixed media - such as acrylic paints, sand, polymer mediums, oil sticks, pastels, collage, spray paint, and pencil crayon - on either heavy paper or canvas - an answer emerges, a painting is formed. She is inspired by her deep endless desire and visceral need to create, along with the ineffable feeling of being present in creative bliss. She is an admirer of the late Helen Frankenthauler, who painted right up to the end of her life.  Deb’s works have been described as: "Spiritual consciousness revealed in a physical form. She paints with a healing intention and creates large mixed media paintings with many layers of translucent colour, and infusions of light and earthy ephemera.” Deb stands for each of us being the creator of our own lives, and that our dominion is within each of us. Through her multi-layered abstract artwork, she invites you pause, feel, and connect - to journey -  into your true authentic self.
