ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work was inspired by nature as most of my work is. I’m fascinated with the contrasts of light and dark everywhere in nature, whether it is looking out of a dark cave on a vast landscape or an insect’s view of bright light streaming in between a tangle of vines. The title, like many of my titles, comes from music. There is a verse in the Leonard Cohen song ‘Anthem’ that struck me as soon as I heard it and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in Oil paint is applied in many thin glazes over a wooden panel. The glazes of oil paint create a semi-translucent surface revealing subtle colour variations with prolonged viewing. There are also asemic, calligraphic-like marks representing the movement of insects. My main references are Monet and Turner. I consider them to be the twin peaks of painting light effects. Contemporary artists I admire are Chu Te Chun, Zao Wou-Ki and Cruz Jimenez. I hope the viewer finds a sense of both peace and movement and can feel something of the flow of energy through the universe. The work is framed in a simple, elegant, natural wood, open grain frame: Size including frame = 79 x 105 x 5cm Size of work on canvas stretcher = 75 x 100 x 4cm

I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
