Extensive travels through Italy and France; and a life spent around the waters of New England have shaped a love and interest in the rhythms of color in the natural world. Michael's paintings are poetic spaces of memory in color that are visceral and physical.
His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions internationally over the last 30 years and was recently featured during the 2022 Venice Biennale at the European Cultural Centre and Art Capital at the Grand Palais, Paris. Other exhibitions include features in Madrid, Spain; Bologna and Ferrara, Italy.
Educated at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Savannah College of Art and Design, Michael has been a Professor of Visual Arts at Roger Williams University for over 25 years.
His work is featured in numerous private and public collections including: The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY; Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, OH and the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC.
Michael lives in Rehoboth, MA and is the cofounder of 3 Gables Studio with his wife, the painter, Monica Lee Rich.
