With parted eye Print

This small painting forms part of a series of three. The works act as fragments as if from a larger scene, with figures or limbs floating within landscapes or interior spaces. My works often evoke elements of the mural or the miniature, exploring the possibilities of a fragmentary approach to narrative time and space. The titles of the three small paintings on board make up a line taken from A Midsummer Night’s Dream: “I see these things with parted eye / When everything seems double”. It alludes to the disorientation of sleep-states or dream-states; and the idea of doubling and states of duality is something I continue to explore in terms of its narrative potential. This painting is made with pigments bound in egg tempera, and oil paint on board. The traditional technique adds to a sense of the paintings hovering between temporal states, alluding to an art historical moment yet situated within the present.
