ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Inspired by the Wodaabe community The Wodaabe people, also matriarchal, are from West & Central Africa. The Wodaabe are a polygamous community. This community reveres male beauty and women select their husbands at the Guerewol festival during the Yakke dance. Young men dressed in elaborate ornamentation and made up in traditional face painting gather in lines to dance and sing, vying for the attention of marriageable young women. The men are judged by three of the tribe’s most beautiful women. Each female judge gets to choose her own winner. The fact that the women watching may already have a husband is not important to this polygamous tribe – because in the Wodaabe women have all the sexual freedom – and are allowed more than one husband.
