ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A description of this collection: This is a uniquely authentic collection of reportage drawings of the Yankees in that all the artwork was done while the artist sat at the players’ feet on the field to record the images during Spring Training in 1987,88 and 89. Nothing was done from pictures. I love the look of the athletes' form and uniform, and wanted to capture it in my art images. I was introduced to the Yankees by Dave Winfield who liked my reportage artwork and invited me to Ft Lauderdale to document his team. I then introduced myself to George Steinbrenner ( because everyone was afraid to do that for me) who looked at my Japan portfolio of Japanese Sumo wrestlers and said “OK, this is what we’re gonna do..”. I was in for the next 3 seasons, after which I was too busy in Tokyo to return. Mr.Steinbrenner, who always called me "my artist" when he walked by me on the field, showed my collection to various staff at Yankee Stadium, but they never used it. This now Vintage collection has been sitting in my flat file in Tokyo and then in NY for 30 years. I was never paid for the work, and the originals and copyright belong solely to me.

ARTIST LYNN MATSUOKA DOCUMENTS CULTURE CNN reported: “Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the way.“Like Degas with his dancers, Lynn Matsuoka set out to depict the particular beauty of performers who devote their lives to an all-encompassing craft, capturing the nuances of the world they create in the process. Her own devotion was noted, and doors opened that had never been opened before, to anyone”. The Artist gained fame working with Sumo, Kabuki Theater, Bunraku, Geisha & Maiko (young Geisha) in Japan for more than 4 decades. A color commentator on the NHK TV worldwide Sumo broadcast for 15 years, she has acted as liaison/translator for NBC sports, Asia Society, President Carter & National Geographic Society, among others.
