I was interested in the motion of the growth of leaves, especially with the influence of moonlight. Just ruminate! I chose oil painting because it belongs to a slower age and I hope that the viewer will sit many hours just looking at the artwork and feel at peace.

Raul Serrano

About the Artist

Raul Serrano

United States

I spent my childhood in Mexico City. My father was an artist at the Academia San Carlos where, as a teenager, I attended classes with him. I moved to New York City to go to school in 1974 and stayed to pursue an art career. I showed at the Brooklyn Museum and numerous galleries and was awarded grants by the NEA, NYSCA, Jackson-Pollock, and Penny McCall foundations. In 1997, after a devastating studio fire, I could no longer afford workspace in New York City and moved upstate to the Hudson River Valley where I have been living and working ever since. My imagery is heavily imbued with symbolic meaning and metaphors. Nature, especially plants, plays a big part in my subject matter. Motion, suspension, and light on a solid object, convey a sense of emotion. Each of my artworks is unique and embodies an expression of my feelings, ranging from melancholy to exhilaration, and my surroundings.
