I started this as a copy of a Elizabeth Vigee Lebrun portrait at the National Gallery in Washington. Recently (pre-covid since the program has been suspended since the start) I'd started augmenting my paintings and this one I wanted to give a more graphic look so did the background and pillows as flat, straight colors. Then it sat. I had thought I might add an endangered animal which I've done in a few paintings recently, but nothing progressed. After the war in Ukraine broke out I saw I could use it as a statement of solidarity, not just with Ukraine, but with peace and against war generally. I darkened the blue back ground, brightened/deepened the yellow in the pillows and added the sunflower.
