I was living in the Manawatu/Palmerston North in "Terrace End" I was attending a study-skills/job seekers course (this was after my three years at University level...) I was treading water really -it was around this time that I wrote Spacecop -and got a Job in computing working for a software firm in town. I had my own place which was pretty cool, and I'd go on walks in the evening alone. No one seems to do soul-destroying-industrial-wastelands -quite as New Zealand can. But I love the juxtaposition of neon and natural lights. What I like about this is the juxtaposition of the natural light of the moon, the artificial light of the streetlight, and the eerie drama of the moonlight through the clouds. The streetlight's hallow seems to fume with malignant rage and the spotlight moon is coldly indifferent to the spectre below. I like the forgotten corners of the world, those that ache, and echo with the isolation of our mankind's existence. Personally, I do not feel "remote" and I do not feel in the least bit "disconnected" or alienated from other people, but there is no doubt in my mind that we all feel a Sehnsucht for a community beyond our own family. I suppose that is one of the reasons that music is so popular, in that allows us to share a feeling of belonging to a more harmonious world, and to experience the affirmations, the validation of our own "private" emotions.
