ABOUT THE ARTWORK

While visiting the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, I became intrigued by the museum wardens, all women well into their seventies-eighties, who while their time sitting on chairs day in, day out, half asleep or lost in their thoughts. They touched me and I tried to capture some of the feelings on their faces.

French street photographer. For several decades, Bernard Russo has been honing his craft through intensive travel to a peak of five international destinations each year. At first glance Bernard Russo’s work appears to be street photography, yet if you look further you see a a study of geometry, a little whimsey, capturing "the decisive moment,” and certainly a sense of place and its people. Watching him work is pure entertainment as he uses his slight frame to disappear into the bustle where his subjects do not even realize their common moments have become his captured art. He is patient and will let life play out in front of him until the time is right to press the shutter. His career in photography may have begun too late to dominate the world’s publications but his work can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the great eyes in photography. Having been born in Algeria where he spent the first ten years of his life, Bernard Russo has developed a keen interest for Muslim countries. He has repeteadly visited and documented such countries as Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Morrocco, Iran, the UAE, Oman, India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Palestine and Turkey, with a view to educating western audiences out of their sometimes sterotyped views about Islam through exhibitions in France, Britain, South America or Bulgaria. In keeping with his interest for education, after a two-year experience teaching high school students the art of street photography, Bernard Russo has successfully conducted several workshops on street photography in France, Greece, Cyprus and Dubai, drawing on his experience to share his experience with photography students.
