ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A photographic collage triptych of my Bulbophyllum orchid, a-dorabil "Candy Ann," showing off her very first bloom. The image in the bottom right is how the orchid displays its flowers, the left and top right photos are taken from above the flower spike. Isn't she bizarre and wonderful in all her yellow-green and pink candy-striped beauty? Weirdest of all, the top of each flower resembles a dragon sticking out its tongue! This plant is so odd it definitely has found its rightful owner in me. Bulbos (what we orchiholics call them) are the largest genus in the Orchidaceae family, having more than 2000 species, and almost all of them are quite unusual. I've displayed my three images on textured backgrounds of different but coordinating colors, one each in navy blue, dark turquoise and deep pine green, and everything is framed in gray and black.

My mind lives in a rather strange world of its own, in a state which I tend to refer to as "delightfully twisted." Through my art, which I am vehemently determined to continue to create with as little outside influence as possible, I work to interpret the concepts my mind creates in a moment-by moment barrage of ideas. Though my work manifests itself in many different ways, from the delicate transparency of digital watercolor, to the no-holds-barred starkness of noir photography, to even the fanciful abstract-turned-conceptual properties of my fractal art, the undercurrent that binds them all is my love of surrealism. I prefer the worlds my mind creates to the one in which I live, and though I create all my art to please myself as a rule, nothing thrills me more than when it speaks to someone else as it does me.
