Fortune Cookie is part of a series of works that analyse and explore Dejeneffe's personal experiences during the pandemic. A symbol of luck, fate and mystery, the fortune cookie is a succinct metaphor for feelings that arose during the pandemic. Throughout this series, Dejeneffe highlights the polarity of emotions felt concurrently during the COVID outbreak. Fear, relief, anxiety and hope collide in a confusing cocktail of emotion. Dejeneffe states that sometimes, luck was her primary feeling; however, other days had her in hiding, adopting the fetal position. The fortune cookie itself almost echoes the shape of a person curled over. Overall, it was difficult to determine how exactly one is supposed to be feeling in a world consumed by sickness and pain. With no rule book or instructions, it has just been a concoction of heightened emotion. Dejeneffe has selected the colour yellow as a universal symbol of happiness. However, even this has a duality. Although mainly considered a colour of optimism, sunshine and hope, this luminous yellow is almost ominously cheerful. Cowardice, sickness and madness are all connotations of the colour, too. Therefore, Dejeneffe's use of yellow is significant in representing the complex interplay between joy and pain in the human experience.
