About The Artwork

The Meaning of the Hebrew Letters that make up the phrase “In Peace”. Bet represents a house or home. It is more than just a shelter from the elements. It is a place that one has the feeling of belonging, and from here you can become the person you are emotionally and spiritually meant to be. The Torah begins with a word that starts with a Bet and reads “In the beginning”. It is an energy of creation before anything is born and grown to maturity. English Equivalent (B/V) Shin is the Hebrew letter that starts the word for peace. You will find this letter on mezuzahs that are on the door posts of homes and rooms which points to one of Gods holy names. It is about joy, wholeness and prosperity. Shin refers to the rhythm of change in everyday life, ultimately leading to a peaceful existence. English Equivalent (S/Sh) Lamed is the tallest letter. Lamed relates to both teaching and learning. Learning and teaching are man’s highest accomplishments. To study is not the ultimate goal, rather it is the deed that results from the knowledge. English Equivalent (L) Vav means a nail, or that which joins together words, sentences and concepts. It is holding or attaching your focus and attention on what you want to create or manifest. The straight upright form of the letter also suggests how important it is to follow our unique individual spiritual path. English Equivalent (V) Final Mem refers to intuitive knowledge, a wise teacher and a spiritual guide or an angel. Angels are seen as messengers, living or dead. Sometimes we can be angels for others, imparting a words or acts that can change a life. When the letter is at the end of the word, we use a Final Mem letter. English Equivalent (M) To be “In Peace”, we must look inside ourselves. The letter Bet, represents a home, and is a metaphor, for the internal emotional and spiritual development that we find within ourselves before we can experience peace in our outer world. Shin, adds the element of holiness, for internal and external peace is surely a holy gift. Lamed reminds us that learning and knowledge and the wisdom and actions that result bring us closer to this goal. Vav gives us the strength to continue to focus on the path ahead of us, as we gain a fuller knowledge of what it means to be “In Peace”. The Final Mem, adds the idea that sometimes we must allow our instincts and faith to lead us along our path. This artwork started out as a 3D Collage with metal parts, wrapped wire, semi-precious gemstones, paint and resin. After the 3D Collage was finished, I photographed itI then took the photograph and put it into photoshop. Here I was able to add as an overlay the Hebrew letters that make up the phrase “In Peace”. Some of the letters were actually photographs of bronze sculptures I made of that particular letter. Other letters were digitally created in the computer, by tracing in the computer, hand drawings of the letter shapes that I designed.

Joyce Steinfeld is best known for her sculpture and artwork, that empowers people to connect with their best self and live an aspiring and inspirational life, with healing love and happiness.   I was born and raised in New York City. I can remember knowing in the first grade that I would be an artist. Art was my passion and I excelled in it in a way that I did not in my other school work. I attended the High School of Music and Art. It was a great honor to go to this school and I traveled on a  bus and train for 3 hours round trip each day to attend school. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts. College is what brought me to live in California.   My mature work started when I realized I could combine my spiritual interests with my artistic creations, and I started to understand the magic and power of the shapes that I made. Humans communicate in many ways, and my shape creations became a language of its own to me. I started to use words in my art and sculpture. An early project was to design a style for the Hebrew Alphabet. I taught myself the alphabet by looking at different versions of a letter, and then designing my own letter style. I also learned the spiritual meanings connected with each letter as taught in the Kabbalah tradition.  I combined letters to make word sculptures and I expanded to different languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and Sikh. I called this work “Language Art”.  I met native speakers of these languages who helped me, to make sure the artwork would be recognized for the word that it represented. Working together with these people, relationships and friendships developed. I began to feel that we are all one, but just wearing different coats that make us seem different to each other.
Words are powerful, in the Bible, it says: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". Everything that is created is first a word. When I abstract the human form I want to express our oneness so I show gender but not race, nationality and ethnicity.
I have public art in the United States and Israel. I had an exhibit in Israel, that I called " The Garden of Hebrew and Arabic Letters". I created a digital book with the sculptures and a poem and translated the book from English to Hebrew and Arabic. I worked with people who helped me with the translations and I was amazed to learn that my poem could not be translated, word for word, but was changed and paraphrased by the translation.
