Known as the “Lady of the Lake,” the TSS Earnslaw is more than a vessel. She is a paradox of endurance and loss. Restored to her 1912 grandeur, she remains one of the last coal‑fired passenger boats in the Southern Hemisphere – a survivor of an era when travel was measured in steam and paddle wheels...

Stephen Buetow is an independent fine art photographer based in Auckland, New Zealand. Following an academic career at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences—where he is now an honorary Associate Professor—Stephen transitioned his lifelong passion for photography into a full-time pursuit in early 2026. His photos portray objects in relation to their surroundings, such that places reveal human values, memory, adaptation, and change over time. This way of seeing is rooted in Stephen’s background in qualitative health research. His academic work sought meaning beneath the surface of human experience; his photography does the same for place, relying on the careful, patient observation of the built and natural environment. Working primarily in black and white, he explores how landscapes and historic places reveal layers of human activity, memory, adaptation, and change over time. A self-taught digital photographer, Stephen’s work has rapidly achieved public recognition. Besides winning the 2026 Heritage New Zealand Photography Competition, he had photographs selected as finalists and shortlisted entries—exhibited at Highwic House in Auckland, April 2026. He has sold open and limited edition prints of his work on Saatchi art.
