ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I can not help being influenced by the photographs from the past history of photography. It is the simple beauty of the figure with props and a setting that feel like a stage set for the model. I can create a story for myself and my viewer that is open for dreaming. This hand-pulled photogravure print is made with Charbonnel 55981 Black, Bistre, and a dash of Sanguine inks on Hahnemühle copperplate paper. I printed an edition of 8 numbered prints, and 3 A/P prints. Hand-pulled print by Ray Bidegain Limited edition of 8 6.25 x 8 inches on an 11 x 14 sheet. Signed numbered and dated by the artist on the lower front.

For the last 22 years I have been lucky enough to spend my time working as a fine art photographer, and specifically working as a photographer who photographed using large format negatives and made platinum prints from the camera negatives. Many of you have collected these platinum prints over the years and some of you have learned platinum printing from me along the way. I love the process and I have loved every minute of this period in my work. Platinum printing is an amazing and beautiful way to make photographs. For the last five years I have started working on making photogravure prints polymer plate photogravure prints, to be specific. I worked on it, decided I wanted to make a change and make a commitment to working as a printmaker making photogravure prints. You all know me as a person who likes handmade photography. Handmade objects are at the heart of my photographic journey and printmaking is all of that, and more. I have some ideas about doing some bookbinding; I have been making some custom clamshell portfolio boxes, objects all handmade by me. My new brand, Cascabel Press, will revolve around hand pulled printmaking and related objects. I am excited and passionate about it, and I hope y’all will get excited with me! Photogravure prints are beautiful, and this type of printmaking has a long and rich history. These objects are ink on paper with so many variables: the paper I use, the color of the ink I choose, and adding some very interesting techniques such as chine collé that I can incorporate to give each print a unique look. This also lends itself to printing in editions, and all this year I have been making my edition 2021 prints each week in small editions of between 8 and 15 prints. I hope you will join me on this journey.
