ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inky Surrounds is part of a series that analyses and explores Dejeneffe’s personal experiences during the pandemic. Dejeneffe investigates the movement of the body through a combination of photography and digital art. Contrasts are a recurring theme in these works, representing the coexistence of opposing feelings in the mind and body. The artist explores how such elements conflict with but also enrich the other. The figure in this artwork is transitioning between two opposing states - liquid and solid. A black substance surrounds her as she arches her back and extends her arms. Is she expelling or absorbing it? The artist notes how this artwork represents her relationship and management of stress during the pandemic. Dejeneffe uses the sticky black liquid to depict the constant state of anxiety that has surrounded us all – consciously or otherwise for the past two years. The figure’s pale features contrast to the inky darkness, yet her expression suggests she is at ease, embracing what is happening to and around her. She is one with the onyx fluid as it forms an abstract skirt of waves below. In such a time of uncertainty, perhaps Dejeneffe suggests we should welcome change as an essential component to growth. Dejeneffe plays with a sense of time and anticipation in this image. On the one hand, we see an image that is rich with movement, dance and energy. However, the figure is suspended in time, resulting in a sense of impending activity.
