Travelling around Iceland I came to a beautiful deep blue glacier lagoon that had been formed between the Breioamerkurjokull glacial tongue and the sea creating icebergs that float idly down towards the open sea, melting as they do. With global warming the glacier is in constant retreat, breaking and melting, filling the lagoon with beautiful small powder blue icebergs. At first, I was struck by the beautiful., abstract sculpture like shapes. But what was more striking was the ephemeral nature of what I was seeing – all of these strange shapes were melting; all would disappear and turn into water that would fill the earth’s ever-rising oceans. It was a potent sign of the way that things that normally happened in geological time are now happening in the span of a lifetime. I took these photographs five years ago and none of these ice sculptures will exist now. They will have been replaced by different shapes that have come crashing off the glacier.

I'm a Northerner - born and brought up in Manchester, living now in Leeds after spending some time living in the Eden Valley in Cumbria. My company is The View From The North. For most of my working life I was a television producer/director - making documentaries and history and travel series for the BBC, ITV and Channel Four in the UK and for PBS, Discovery, The History Channel and The Travel Channel in the US. After more than thirty years as a film maker I switched my attention to writing and as an author I had ten books published. Like a lot of my television work subjects covered included social, industrial and architectural history. My video camerawork featured in several programmes and most of my books were illustrated with my photographs. Travelling the world, I've always had cameras with me and inspiration has come particularly from the great mountain ranges I've explored - Alps, Pyrenees, Andes, Himalayas and Rockies - and from remote wild places I've travelled like Patagonia, Iceland and Norway. But my biggest influence has been the ever changing landscape of the part of Britain where I lived for many years - the Eden Valley in Cumbria.
