In this 2022 series - Alleyways - my fascination for backstreets and alleyways is displayed. I have an obsession for the contrast of the filth with the gracious shattering of coloured lights. In October 2022 I visited Hong Kong to explore the beauty of filthiness. My profile: Ties van Brussel (Netherlands, 1984) is a Dutch physician, street photographer and illustrator living in Amsterdam. His photography work focuses on nightly urban settings, with a special interest in the atmosphere of coloured lights in Japanese and Chinese cities. You may find the complete photo series of my visit to Hong Kong on my portfolio website, next to other photo work:

Netherlands
Ties van Brussel was born in Sint-Oedenrode in 1984, and raised in the adjacent municipality of Son en Breugel, in the south of the Netherlands. From his early youth, anything that had visual impact intrigued him. In his early childhood, he spent much time on gazing at imagery found in old comics, old MAD magazines, and was struck by the colours and composition of the compelling cinematographical wonder from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Paul Verhoeven. He enjoyed drawing his own comics, primarily in gag-format. His productivity was hindered by an innate sense of constant impatience. Thankfully, the impatience diminished while photographing. In 2012, he started a PhD-fellowship, which allowed him to focus more on urban photography. In 2017, a visit to Japan totally stirred up his believes about having a true passion. After wandering around in Tokyo, night after night, he found that he had a profound hunger for capturing rural settings. These scenes, which explore the intercourse between colours and composition, were just there in live display. Instead of having to paint or draw them, it now took him only one click with his camera to find the aesthetic he was searching for. Since then, he never attenuated his obsessive love for the hunt for involuntary, unintended beauty in the backstreets and alleyways of Asian cities.
