The State of Texas has a wide selection of ecosystems. These range from the beaches and salt marshes of the Gulf Coast, the swamps and forests of East Texas, the rolling hills of the Hill Country in Central Texas to the plains and deserts of West Texas. This manipulated digital photograph was captured alongside the US 87 highway in the Hill Country. Light rain and mist, left a sprinkling of water droplets on the vegetation there. The edible Prickly Pear Cactus is named for its purple, pear shaped fruit. This plant is a food staple for animals and humans alike. The fruit is very sweet, but care must be taken to carefully peal the skin and tiny thorns from it. The young pads can be eaten raw, pickled, or cooked. In times of draught, ranchers and farmers use flame throwers to burn the thorns of these plants so that cattle can easily eat them.
