ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the works in automatic writing by the surrealists, and then used by spiritualists. The writing is created by filling a pen with a photographic solution called cyanotype. This chemistry reacts to sunlight. The aim was to allow the language to flow freeform, and to overwrite until the writing became an abstract tangle of lines. The whole piece exposes as I work on it. The creation is performative and relaxing. The text filled paper is then exposed to sunlight with the circle part shielded from the full exposure. The writing is about the moon, but I honestly couldn't tell you what it says. The blue colour is the signature colour of the cyanotype photography process.
