ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A fascination with jungle cats and research on ancient Aztec and Mayan myth led me to the deities worshipped by the Aztecs. One of which was Tezcatlipoca, ruler of the first of four worlds created and destroyed before the present universe. Mankinds continued struggle to find harmony and balance with our natural surroundings is of key importance to me and is part of the zeitgeist. I chose to depict this merging of man and nature symbolized by the animal disguise Tezcatlipoca donned to suggest the necessity for humanity to revere, embrace and protect the planet we share with all creatures. The posture is one of prostration, submission, and respect.
