ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work was inspired by a trip to Biltmore Estate in Asheville North Carolina where I was photographing botanical specimens through glass windows of the greenhouse conservatories. I wanted to create a color photograph that replicated how I experience the world through my blindness. The image didn't turn out how I visualized it. Like any good gardener I composted my image to see what else it might become. I manipulated the photograph until I arrived at the painterly image titled Orchid Flow. It is a delightful image to focus on while meditating.

Mitch Eckert is an award-winning artist and educator based in Louisville Kentucky where he teaches all things photographic at the University of Louisville. His passion for photography began early in his artistic career aided by a bb gun accident that left him blind in one eye as a youngster. Prior to receiving his M.F.A. from Ohio University, he completed his B.F.A. from Indiana University studying photography and sculpture. The choice of photographic equipment, process and materials needs to have a good marriage with concept and content. Eckert utilizes film when a specific need lends itself as the ideal solution conceptually.
