About this image : In this photograph staged from models, without photomontage, the sky is really that of the region of Nîmes, in the south of France, where the artist lives. The photo was taken in his studio garden. Everything else is fictitious and deluded. On the left steep rocks and their reflections, on the right other rocks, less visible. The horizon is almost placed in the middle of the photo, the composition is very neat. Between the two islands in the foreground, emerges from the sea a vertical and thin peak, quite surprising. The sea is calm, the sky clear, the whole gives off an impression of calm and mystery. My approach : In October 2021, something clicked. Using the building materials at my disposal, I created a sketch of a landscape that touched me. Are brought to the surface, my first photos taken in childhood with miniatures, the retrospective of James Casebere in Munich, the models of Chris Burden, the stagings of Gilbert Garcin. But something else was happening, the aquatic world, the water. “The sea was over there in the reservoir of my memory” as John Fante wrote. These islands detached and separated from the rest of the world, located in a geography that is both real and fictional, these places conducive to reconstruction, now offer me a new form of escape, between reality and invention. I use very simple means to simulate the sea on a flat surface, to evoke islands in three dimensions. I take the whole picture with a wide angle and a low angle view, while taking the sky as a backdrop. I try to build landscapes from scratch that I stage with natural lighting. The image obtained is realistic to a certain extent, I am under the illusion but the doubt must hover, it is assumed. I chose the square format to stand out from landscape photography. I bet on color, that of the Mediterranean, I use architecture to indicate a scale. The sea is calm, the sky clear, the whole gives off an impression of calm and mystery.
