Pennishiri means 'Male Mountain' in the Ainu language. It is one of two mountains that overlooks Lake Akan - one of the 3 main Ainu settlements in Hokkaido, Japan. The Ainu are an indigenous people of Japan and this photo is part of the project 'Master, An Ainu Story', which has been exhibited at The ICP Museum in New York, The Brunei Gallery, SOAS, London and Sway Gallery, London and Stockholm. The photograph was taken at around 6am on a December morning in temperatures of around - 20 degrees (Centigrade) and this spot is located on the perimeter of Lake Akan, about a 30minute walk from the town. I didn't stick around much after as it was proving increasingly difficult to feel my toes! The original artwork is is signed and numbered on the back and printed on Giclee Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper, which gives it a textured almost hand drawn feel.
