ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This series of three photographs was created in Poland during Markus' journey on foot from Venice to St. Petersburg. The images were captured on medium format film, and all composition was achieved in-camera, with virtually no post-processing (except for preparation for printing). These exceptionally rare and precious photographs, though taken using classical photographic techniques rather than just being photographs ("drawings, writings with light"), could be termed "phozoographs" ("paintings of light"). In fact, they appear to recount deeper stories that emerge from and touch more profound layers of consciousness. They narrate the processes of profound immersion in nature, where the landscape transforms into not just a world to be observed but an inner aspect of the spectator. It seems that walking nearly 3,000 kilometres was necessary to capture these images. Indeed, neither their process nor their style can be replicated, making these three photographs unique creations. They offer the viewer the opportunity to become absorbed in a landscape that morphs into imagination.

Phozoographs: Art as a Nexus Between Conscious and Unconscious. Markus Zohner resides and works in Switzerland. With his theatre troupe, he embarks on tours worldwide. His book, 'The Rediscovery of the Amber Road,' narrates his over 4000-kilometre journey on foot from Venice to St. Petersburg, spanning twelve countries in the heart of Europe. His photographic works all revolve around analogue materials, with a focus on the moment of image creation, the instant of capture. Indeed, his images are scarcely post-processed (except for preparation for the printing process). Zohner's photographic craft revolves around the alchemical transformation of analogue film material. Bursts of colour, reminiscent of chemical pyrotechnics, cascade over the canvas, disentangling the image's link to reality. Although his works employ classical photographic techniques, they transcend mere 'photographs' (Greek: 'drawings, writings with light')—a more fitting term might be 'phozoographs' (Greek: 'paintings of light'). In fact, they seem to submerge into deeper layers of sensation, detached from the concreteness of consciousness, and from there, they resonate with the viewer. They narrate processes of immersion in the environment, so that the subject is not frozen as mere observed beings or objects, but instead transforms into an inner facet, a dizzying state of the observer.
