Dejeneffe's 'Rebirth' responds to the emotions that arise during personal renewal. After an intense, unsettled period– such as the pandemic - we are more acutely aware of the changes occurring in our minds and bodies. Dejeneffe is closely in tune with her mind and body. This work expresses the artist's relationship with her mind and body whilst embarking on her personal growth and care journey. Like many aspects of life, rebirth is a process that unites polarities of the mind and body. Strength and vulnerability. Stability and flexibility. Suffering and relief. To be human is a conundrum of complexities, opposites and puzzles. Dejeneffe uses tactile, tawny feathers and the model's naked body to illustrate vulnerability. Yet, a layer of shell protects the figure, representing our body's strength and resilience. We often underestimate our strength, leading to instincts of self-preservation. This artwork is a tactile reminder to take our time. Dejeneffe encourages us to embrace life's processes in a world that champions instant gratification. Rebalance, rebuilding and rebirth take time, and we should appreciate this as an ever-maturing course of personal evolution.
