Raised on a farm in her native Germany, photographer Dorit Thies conjures highly expressive and evocative imagery utilizing light, color and unexpected props to create her memorable work. In addition to her commercial photography projects done in collaboration with international beauty brands such as Estee Lauder and ELLE magazine, Dorit’s focus has been on fine art photography since the early 1990s. Her first solo show, “Modern Goddess” debuted in Los Angeles in 1993 and led to another show curated by Chris Wester of New York’s Christy Art house shown at the Katonah Art Museum, Westchester, N.Y. Beginning with these first conceptual shows, which were all shot analog, Greek mythology and female archetypes have served as inspiration for Dorit. Her capacity to draw subjects out of themselves and integrate them into larger, memorable tableaus that transmute portraiture into powerful visual narratives led to commissions like one with Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation. For this advocacy project meant to gain support for patients during a critical point in the AIDS epidemic, Dorit traveled to Uganda and South Africa to photograph patients living with the disease. These uplifting, unwavering portraits were printed life-size and presented in prominent locations such as San Francisco’s TransAmerica Pyramid Building and at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington D.C. to name a few. Balancing her work as a fashion and beauty photographer with her fine art photography, Dorit has more recently expanded her repertoire to include floral still-lifes. Her first botanical compositions earned her an invitation to Nizhny Tagil, Russia, to present her images at a solo show in early 2020, just before the pandemic hit. Dorit’s passion for photographing flowers and botanicals has resulted in a constantly growing body of work. So it was a natural progression when she was selected by the producer of the groundbreaking Farm & The Feminine project, Eric Hiss-Loreda, to photograph women farmers in one of the world’s most iconic cannabis cultivation regions, Northern California’s Emerald Triangle. Although not familiar with this remote area and cannabis cultivation, Dorit was immediately taken by the theme and the women, saying “I intuitively knew I would feel a deep connection with these female farmers. It’s like we were long-lost family, all born from a long lineage of Earth-conscious people.” Stylistically, the work of 19th Century photographer Edward S.
