ABOUT THE ARTWORK

It was a very cold Winters day and I went to visit St Mary's Church ruins at Reculver Country Park, Herne Bay, Thanet, Kent. I went with the objective of flying my drone, to obtain some aerial images, However, because of the weather conditions, which were freezing fog, it was unsafe to fly. I went for a long walk and I had my iPhone with me. It was very atmospheric. I discovered a shingle beach area below the ruins of St Mary's Church. At the end of the beach, I discovered the remains of an old wooden groyne, which had been eroded into a rather beautiful sculptural shape, revealing the internal grain structure inside. At the time, I had my iPhone with me and my Old, Canon 5D digital SLR. I took some close-ups with the iPhone, knowing I had some apps on the phone, which could help me manipulate the image, to help bring out the abstract nature and sculptural shapes, of the weathered wood. I was fascinated by this natural abstract entirely formed by wave action over the years.

I was a scientist for many years, working in the field of medical research, both in academia and in industry. In late 2004, I left science to pursue my creative interests in photography and the visual arts. I am now a professional photographer living in South East London. My photography business is called White Windmill Photography. I was a member of a Tea Leaf Arts for two years, a co-operative, artist led, gallery in Brockley, Lewisham. I had two solo shows during this time. Subjects that interest me the most, include modern and classical architecture, nature, rural life, landscapes and seascapes. My art practice centres on nature and the passing of the seasons. I have been involved in a long-term project to record a photographic essay of Beckenham Place Park, with an emphasis on different weather and light conditions encountered through the cycle of the seasons. More recently I have become interested in using my photographs to create abstract works and digital art, based on surface textures and patterns of man-made objects, natural found objects and architectural details. I am now a contributing arist at the Misty Moon Gallery, at the Ladywell Tavern, Lewisham S.E London and I have participated in three of their exhibitions. Below is a link to my webpage at
