ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As humans we have proclaimed sovereignty over all the lands of this planet and staked our claim with a flag of one form or another. In creating this painting, I imagined that, if the giant whales that grace our coves here in Newfoundland were to do the same, they would claim sovereignty over the entire seven seas. This is their flag. The original, an acrylic painting on wood, is not for sale. Please note, archival prints from this file will print an image with a 1 to 3 ratio, not the 1 to 2 ratio listed, which is the paper size. In other words, a 4"x12" image on the 6"x12" paper size, or 8"x24" on the next size paper, etc.

Born and raised in Newfoundland, Peter Harris headed west to British Columbia for adventure as a young man, and stayed. His early interests and studies in British Columbia were focused upon the arts, particularly, writing, video, photography and painting. Harris was fortunate to parlay his creative skills into a career with the City of Richmond, first as an arts instructor/curator and administrator for the city's Public Art Gallery and Arts Centre, and later, serving as Exhibit and Program Coordinator for Richmond Museum and Heritage Services. After retiring, in 2014, he resumed his life-long passion for art making in earnest. Harris now lives a bi-coastal life in two Canadian coastal communities, White Rock, British Columbia, on the Pacific Coast, and the small outport town of Trinity East, Newfoundland, on the North Atlantic Coast. Much of his time is spent creating mixed media painting and photographic works, influenced by his exposure to life and nature in these two contrasting communities, as well as his travels in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.
