About The Artwork

This is a rolling bascule bridge in London's docklands. It carries Garnet Street between Shadwell Basin and what was the old Eastern Dock, now filled in to be Wapping Woods. Bridges like this were built around 1938 when London's docklands were part of the largest port on Earth. They were raised or lowered by pumping water into or out of a large tank to the upper rear of the bridge as seen in the image. They are one of the few remaining features of what was once an enormous industrial area, and is now a residential one.

Photography – the word – means “drawing with light.” More than just an act of mechanistic photo-copying, the purpose of photography is to create; not simply replicate. Painters strive for something beyond the objective detail of a subject by seeking out its essence. Drawing with light should do the same.
