ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo is part of a series of images that I have taken at sunrise at the Fort Fisher Civil War Battleground site in North Carolina. The image was created by burying myself deep within a thick stand of bushes on the shore and shooting the pinpricks of light coming through the dense brush with the shutter open for a full second and moving the camera. I sometimes use the camera as a brush to paint with the light/forms in front of me or I attempt to compose images that capture the essence of the subject but keep it's obvious physical characteristics a mystery. This shot captures the play between the sun and the sky as darkness is erased. As with all of my images - there is very little, if any, processing done in the computer after the image is taken. Hand numbered and signed on the reverse of the print. Printed on fine art Matte paper.

I was born in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1967. After graduating from Vassar College I had a career as a financial advisor during the .com boom of the 90's. After 9/11, I moved with my family to Wilmington NC and created a completely new life centered around my work as a professional musician, photographer and woodworker. My instincts trend toward abstraction and I take my inspiration from abstract expressionism and street photography. My ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) work attempts to keep the "subject" of the image a mystery while simply capturing the interplay of light, shadow and form that are present in a particular scene. I primarily shoot with a digital camera but employ very little, if any, computer processing to the photo after it has been taken. As for awards and exhibitions, etc...I have received plenty but I don't feel the need to catalog this recognition in some attempt at legitimacy. Art is valid or it's not - regardless of previous accolades.
