Shiva is one of the main deities in the Indian heaven of gods. The world of the Indian gods has long fascinated Europeans, starting with the Greeks in the wake of Alexander, who identified Shiva with Dionysus, for example. Of course, the ancient gods and goddesses are still alive in India today and form one of the great world religions. The exuberant, radiant polytheism of India is also "hip" in the West.
