As an artist who is blind in one eye I had an eye opening experience while visiting Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia. I noticed how the glass created an obfuscated view of the Hibiscus flower that nearly matched how my blind experiences color, shape and form. This photograph and that of the fern go hand in hand and were the beginnings of my focused exploration of viewing gardens through the glass of conservatories. The print looks as soft as the flower when printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper.

Mitch Eckert is an award-winning artist and educator based in Louisville Kentucky where he teaches all things photographic at the University of Louisville. His passion for photography began early in his artistic career aided by a bb gun accident that left him blind in one eye as a youngster. Prior to receiving his M.F.A. from Ohio University, he completed his B.F.A. from Indiana University studying photography and sculpture. The choice of photographic equipment, process and materials needs to have a good marriage with concept and content. Eckert utilizes film when a specific need lends itself as the ideal solution conceptually.
