About The Artwork

From the series "The Uncanny." The psychological concept of The Uncanny (Freud knew it as Das Unheimliche) might be summarized simply as the experiencing of an eerie feeling of the familiar without seeing the real or original source of that familiarity. The Uncanny is particularly evident where the organic nature of human likeness is concerned. A doll will never achieve the authenticity of the form that it seeks to replicate, and experiencing this approximation—especially through sight—can produce fear, apprehension, and even revulsion. The photo series The Uncanny examines the intimate relationship between people and another organic subject—food. The Uncanny presents its subjects in a new, unusual light, literally. Shadow, luminescence, and color are all juxtaposed in a subtle but massively bewildering way. Something’s not right, but the viewer can’t put their finger on exactly what it is.
