The staircases drop from above, part of a common structural element connecting the city. These architectural viaducts that hold up the elevated subway lines are unique and run throughout the most diverse neighborhoods. Part of a large subway network that sprawls outward to the far reaches of its five boroughs. During pandemic lockdown in New York City the streets have been deserted and the absence of people and traffic has allowed me to appreciate these old structures and what lies beneath them. I am a Brooklyn, New York, based photographer. In pursuit of finding a way of recording the pandemic from my own unique perspective, my project, “Stepping Back” is about the elevated subway lines that run through the boroughs of New York. The pandemic has allowed me to “step further back” and capture these majestic structures embedded in our communities. Subway lines frame the life below, thus revealing New York to me.
