ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta PhotoRag, Archival Pigment signed on the back. “Photography to me is the need to tell a story about a place. I want to convey the essence of a place, so to bring the viewer right there, to make him smell it’s fragrances, hear the noises and experience sensations.” We are in Valtellina, Lombardy, Italy, right in the middle of the Italian Alps. At the beginning of June cows are driven above 1800 m in summer graze on high pastures, where the grass is special and gives to the cheese its extraordinary taste. In the Picture Samuel Milesi, 18 years old, brings small twigs used to light the fire to heat cow milk, this allows to keep the mountain pasture clean, a continuous and valuable maintenance. The image recalls the “Homo selvadego” legend. Yety, Big Foot, every culture and continent gives a different name to this creature, in the Alps it’s Homo Selvadego (Valtellina Dialect). In the alpine mythology is a man covered in hair, long-haired and bearded, dressed in leaves and tree bark. Alpine traditions identifies him as shepherd, master of dairy methods and repository of ancient knowledge. He is a character who was associated with a terrible figure that evoked fear, but he was symbol of harmony man-nature too, positioning itself between human, savage and divine.
