The Three Graces Marble Statue, Antonio Canova Print

Antonio Canova’s statue The Three Graces is a Neoclassical sculpture, in marble, of the mythological three charites, daughters of Zeus. Identified on some engravings of the statue as, from left to right, Euphrosyne, Aglaea and Thalia, who were said to represent youth - beauty "Thalia", mirth "Euphrosyne", and elegance "Aglaea". The Graces presided over banquets and gatherings, to delight the guests of the gods. As such they have served as subjects for historical artists including Sandro Botticelli and Bertel Thorvaldsen. In art, the Three Graces have been a popular subject for centuries, embodying the ideal of beauty and grace. They are frequently shown in a close embrace, dancing in a circle, which signifies their unity and the joy they bring to both gods and mortals. The Graces were also associated with the retinue of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and were believed to bestow beauty and charm upon young women.
