ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From the "The Ways Of My Heritage" photogram collection. This photogram explores the ways in which people conduct their everyday lives and experience their everyday connections, inspired by my own visits to rural India as an Australian-Thai of Indian ethnicity - in other words, from the perspective of the Indian diaspora. I use the darkroom to manually document fictitious scenes from my Indian heritage, symbolically merging fact and fiction. The image is de-contextualised to enable viewers to project their own worldviews to complete the picture. The fluid and ethereal quality of lines are achieved by hand-drawing the image on acetate using fine liners - the acetate is then processed in the darkroom using traditional documentary cameraless photographic techniques. Exposing the drawing to light creates a print without a camera on photographic paper, reflecting the rawness and essence of our own human lines, stripped down to black and white. The result is an attractive aesthetic that is both bold and delicate as well as modern and contemporary - perfect for admiring the nuances of traditional Indian culture as a subject. Photo Rag Baryta paper Frame specifications: Black wooden framed photograms include a hand-signed white (PH-neutral) window mount and fixed sawtooth hangers ready for display.
