"Photography of the Mind" is a series of chemigrams I made in 2017 in Pula, Croatia. I started to work with this technique looking for nothingness in art. In a world full of artificial images, colors and shapes, I was searching for peace of mind in abstraction. When gazing at them, I do not want for the spectator to follow my vision, but to create or awake their own vision instead. I chose this medium for this reason exactly- it is both simple and radical at the same time. Its just a chemichal on a black and white photographic paper. And a touch of author's magic.

Dejan Štifanić is a Croatian Photographer and Visual Artist. His day job as a photojournalist for over two decades had resulted in thousands of portrait, street and lifestyle photographs, published in various publications and exhibited in dosens of exhibitions. In 2017, he wanted to take a step further, to cross over into the unknown; he created a series of chemigrams- a photographer's intervention on an empty photo paper and exhibited them with great success as "Photography of the Mind". "The starting point of this series of works is the tradition of working in the darkroom, however, in this instance, without the accompanying photographic apparatus. These works fall into the sphere of alternative photographic practices, and are created directly by the effect of chemicals onto an empty photo paper, i.e. large-format color film. Using photographic materials, the author does not create a photograph, but a chemigram. In that manner, Štifanić's work moves away from photography and gets closer to the act of painting. It is an intuitive, experimental act, without knowing what the end result will be. He gets under the skin of an undeveloped film, revealing the unsuspected possibilities of an interaction between chemistry, matter and magic." Eugen Borowsky, August 2018
