Traditional photography relies on the light sensitivity of photo paper and a set of chemicals to develop and fix the image. Digital camera, computer and inkjet printer ‘photography’ relies on electronics, software and ink technology to create the same image. By marrying the two photographic techniques through the use of chemicals (acetic acid), printer-based pigments, and watercolors, Lane’s acid washed photographs take on both texture – as the acid breaks down the cellulose in the paper – and translucency, when the acid interacts with the watercolors and the pigments. The resulting one-of-a-kind images take the best elements of traditional photography and watercolor painting, creating something new. Each acid washed photograph is unique because each one is dependent on the hand application of acid and watercolors to the image on the paper.
