About the Artist

Kerry Buckland

Australia

Born in Melbourne, Australia. Moved to the west coast of Victoria where an increasing interest in the environment and indigenous plant species was established. Started studying painting at Geelong Fine Art School for a few years.Completed a Diploma of Visual Art in Geelong 1995-96. Traveled to Indonesia and Europe. Exhibited in Melbourne and was represented by Bulle Galleries. Graduated from a Bachelor Of Arts- Fine Art with distinction in 2004 at RMIT and continued with postgraduate studies, completing a Master of Fine Art from RMIT in 2006. In 2005 won the Siemens/RMIT Post Graduate Fine Art Scholarship which enabled travel to New York in March 2007 to complete a Residency at the Gershwin Hotel. My current practice examines aspects of contemporary Western cultures relationship to the environment. Using media which is usually associated with mass production and mass culture, it explores the cultural mediation of nature. The work explores decorative floral motifs extracted from nature and employs them as emblems of this cultural mediation. In 2010 I was Artist in Residence at St Vincents Hospital Melbourne. 2012 I was an artist in Residence at Can Serrat in Barcelona. 2013=2014 I have been awarded a returning Artist In Residency at St Vincents Hospital in Melbourne. In 2014 and 2017 I was Artist In Residence at JIWAR, Gracia, Barcelona. I continue my position on the committee of an Artist run Gallery Upstairs at The Napier in Fitzroy Melbourne.
