For 900 days I was compelled to make a monotype*each day without fail. Working from my studio, in hotels, and even in the hospital, images poured through me and demanded their say. I listened and in the process was transformed. These prints depict my struggles with the rare disease scleroderma which...

Using a rich language of color and symbolism, Sybil Archibald describes a world beyond words. While still in her twenties, Archibald was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disease scleroderma and given five years to live. She credits the healing nature of making art with keeping her alive and going strong for more than 25 years. During her Monotype of the Day Project, she created a new monotype each day for 900 days. She never missed a day even when in the hospital for 3 weeks. This daily practice is integral to her inner healing. Archibald's book, The Inner Life of the Artist: 900 Monotypes in 900 Days, pairs her monotypes and writing with sacred poetry from around the world to give the reader rare insights into the healing nature of art and the life of an artist. Archibald has a lifelong interest in sacred art practices and sacred poetry and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in medieval spirituality from New York University. She also trained extensively in traditional sacred arts including medieval manuscript painting at the School of Sacred Arts in Manhattan (now closed). Her artistic practice builds on the foundational knowledge, learned from these traditions, that creation is a spiritual act. Applying this knowledge to her work deepens her connection to the healing nature of the creative process. Archibald’s work has been shown nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, and universities including the Newark Museum of Art, Montclair Art Museum, Art Fair 14C, and Monmouth and Rutgers Universities. She creates out of her studio in Manufacturers Village, East Orange, NJ, and is encouraged by her husband, three dogs, and 12 koi.
