The original photograph for the inspiration was taken by me on a mission trip to Cuba in 2003. I was really taken by the peace these people had in spite of their lack of personal freedom. They make the best of what they have. In this photo I am emphasizing the rocks the boys are playing with. I asked what they were doing and I got an excited long explanation of the city they were building. Imagination is FREE indeed. These boys have no internet, no online gaming, no TV, no cell phone, no toys. They have their minds and they let it run free.

For years, I lived with the notion that being an artist was just a fanciful dream, discouraged by letters of rejection the said, “We like your work, it is just not what we’re looking for right now,” led me to trade my paints for a mouse and ventured into the commercial art world. A few years ago, I taught a drawing class and that’s when I realized that the dream was dormant but not dead. I shook off the old dusty brushes and rekindled the flame. Encouraged by my son and close friends, I returned to art school to refine my skills, gain momentum and renew my confidence. I’m delighted to say those dreams are now a reality. My inspiration comes from my faith in God and the Bible. From abstract to realism, I allow the vision to dictate the medium and style, not the other way around. My personal convictions guide my hand. I paint because I find joy in it and others are encouraged by it. Although the inspiration comes from my personal faith the topics are universal: joy, pain, encouragement, fear, hope. Art purchased simply for decor, will ultimately become invisible. Art that truly inspires or moistens the eyes is reserved for the museum. My desire? is that my work is not just about a pretty picture for a wall, but more about provoking an experience the viewer has in their heart, which causes them to bring an image home that will never “disappear” into the wallpaper.
