ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work is from a series I call "The Art of Tools". I am a master brush maker (contemporary Sumi-e brushes) and I make silicone tools for the Encaustic Hot Box/Hot Palette. The process of creating tools and my printmaking work are closely connected and inspire each other. The work pushes my tool making and my tool making pushes the work. A true and deep connection.

I am fortunate to have spent a lot of time in Asia and as a result has grown to love the culture, place, and people. During my time in Taiwan in particular, I became interested in the tools and materials used by artists working in the guóhuà and Sumi-e style of painting and especially interested in the handmade papers, and brushes. Over the years I have adapted many of these materials/processes into my art practice and more specifically around my brush making/silicone tool making. I am also a printmaker, primarily working with encaustic, creating monotypes. I design and make most of the specialized tools that I work with to create my prints.
