ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Unique piece. Painting on paper made by silkscreen printing. Series C2–1, year of realization 2015 Canson Edition 250 gs/m2 paper, 112 x 76 cm. My projects seek to represent different types of architectural, sculptural and geometric structures, establishing a dialogue with the essential components of the image: light, color, matter and form, originating the works from experimentation and research with materials, shapes and color. My work is based on experimentation with various techniques that play with the combination of modular geometries -mostly squares, rectangles, triangles, rhombuses, trapezoids and irregular shapes- using a palette based on primary colors on stained backgrounds. Formally, my projects defined as contemporary painting are a hybrid between geometric and informalist painting elaborated through graphic procedures, combining various techniques such as silkscreen and other printing systems, worked as painting on paper. In short, it is a painting made independently of the procedure used to obtain it. In my particular artistic conception, the graphic media and processes only fulfill the function of a working tool, but my final purpose when facing the result of my work before the paper would be similar to the one used by a painter when facing the canvas. In previous series you can see backgrounds that could be considered more pictorial, with color spots or proliferation of irregular and organic shapes combined with geometric ones, but little by little, the latter are gaining ground over the former, dispensing with those color spots, which sometimes constitute the background and sometimes contribute to the figuration within the structural composition, to give more and more importance to the white of the support as a creative element. Currently in the development of the structures, the form, the structure, the color and the composition are elements that I place at the same level, without granting greater preponderance to one over the others. None of these elements can be observed in isolation from the rest, but form a harmonious whole. In practice, the projects are at the same time a finished work and a bench for experimentation and learning, with all that this entails. In the arrangement of the work I do not intervene on the pieces from beginning to end until I have finished them, continuing with the following ones. I usually work with several papers/supports simultaneously, with certain shapes and combinations, modifying them continuously, in a process that never closes completely. Since always, my approach assumes an experimental process of pictorial creation with graphic media, which is a constant in my creative work. Thus, the previous series are undoubtedly more informalist, with backgrounds completely covered with color combined with geometric shapes. However, considering the evolution of my artistic practice, little by little these images have been minimized towards the geometric form of flat ink and it is very likely that in future evolutions I will continue to work around basic colors that highlight the shape and structure of the constructions. What I never intend to give up is the experimental and investigative character of creation, especially to remain open to the revelation of new results, without being interested in works in which I can predict the result beforehand. Although the techniques used may obey a careful program, the capacity for surprise that, even for me, the interaction of different inks, transparencies and glazes shows, by its very nature and opacity, is one of the most interesting aspects within the creative process and the development of my work.
