About The Artwork

Mohsin Hamid writes about Idrees Hanif - "Idrees blurs boundaries more and more as he evolves. His sensibility and expression are so unusual. I always find myself staring, even as I start to wonder where I really am." Born in 1989 in Lahore, Idrees Hanif completed his BFA from the School of Visual Art and Design at BNU Lahore in 2014. He works with objects and manipulates them to evoke one’s personal experience, working with the materials like cement, plaster, wood, metal and transforming them. When one has been in a participant in the education of young artists over one's life time, one occasionally feels that one has seen it all. The annual 'crop' of talent which has attained various levels of accomplishment and a sense of their individual way of creating visual order becomes a familiar experience. Each year brings it's surprises of course, but by and large, the crop follows a predictable pattern. However, some seasons throw up an unusually diverse set of fresh 'takes' on the world of art making. Idrees Haneef belongs to one such group from the School of Visual Art and design at BNU. From an angry young student, struggling to forge a visual path suited to his energies as a sculptor, he emerged as an unusual 'maker' of objects through his final project. The transformation was fascinating to witness. The experimentations with materials and processes were long and the failures were no doubt harrowing for Idrees. However, the vision was slowly beginning to take shape. The long hours of probing and pummeling the physicality of material, was in itself leading to the appearance of solutions, in which the medium quite literally became the message. The extra-ordinairy beauty inherent in the every day object once it was expressed in the equally handsome medium of wood was oddly alluring and a visual discovery. This young artist has continued to explore his proficiency with a clear understanding of the potential embedded in it. The individual works grow ever more complex and demanding as he is called upon to sift the nuances that can be coaxed to emerge from the material. His vocabulary matures alongside his explorations. Idrees Haneef is a young artist who demands attention.

I work with the objects and manipulate them to evoke one’s personal experience, working with found objects and materials like cement, plaster, wood, and metal and transforming them. I used different variety of materials and objects and transform them to re- visualize the relation between art and life and sculpture and the viewer. I started working lately with the objects selecting from the spaces I see and observe and live in, subsequently refining my own conceptual and visual vocabulary that emerged through his focus on point of intersection between space and objects later on I become representator of the same object as an artist. In the course of process i created sculptures by setting an antithesis to confront it. The special mode between ‘’art and life’’; ‘’error and truth’’: ‘’space and objects ‘’ and sculpture and viewer, I don’t bound myself to a specific class of material as far as taking material to its final destination is one of my main subject where i think that, ‘’material is soul of the object and objects are time’’ I create a complete single liner dialogue in which object completes itself as an resolved piece of work of art depending upon the space and study of objects where a daily life common object has too much to offer in terms of life and art.
