About The Artwork

I am spending more time thinking about the human figure in sculpture, and believe that in its abstract form, it makes a powerful connection with the imagination. The abstract sculpture suggests, and the imagination fills in the rest. This sculpture is made in steel and has a variety of surface finishes. High glossy details, contrast with the main body of the sculpture which is worked with an emulsion paint leaving a visible texture. Some surfaces have been worked with a layer of surface colour. It is mounted on a oak base, which has a darkened oil finish. The sculpture can be scaled up if required, to become a floor standing work , most likely made from aluminium, which would make it non corrosive and suitable for any outdoor environment. This sculpture can be scaled up to 2m . I outside it will be made in aluminium, which makes it non-corrosive and able withstand the elements. The sculpture is in an edition of4, this being 1/4 Please not a lead time of 7-14 days is needed to make up this piece.

Paul Stein was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1956 , and lives and works out of his studio in Cape Town. He works in the medium of metal and mixed media sculpture, and his works are in collections both in South Africa and abroad. I work primarily within the direct metal approach to sculpture, as opposed to the cast metal method. My raw materials are sheets of steel or aluminium which I shape towards the desired end. I am drawn towards simplicity in form and the idea of stating an idea with minimum fuss. I find inspiration in many things, but my prime area of interest at the moment is using the medium of sculpture to express human intent. I am also interested in the idea of fragmentation, of form, movement and implied movement in sculpture. How do you alter the static nature of sculpture, and make it come alive?
