About The Artwork

(Interview Article) Contemporary women sculptors in China are a small and special group. In sculpture creation, there is continuous communication between working experience and mind and body. Women's physical and mental experience in this process is different from men's, and women need to seek opportunities for releasing themselves by trial and error, which gives them unique artistic spirits. Some of the typical linguistic features in Wu Jiahui's works just originate from her female identity. She records and presents the ever-changing emotional world with her unique observation perspective, and her full appreciation and grasp of details make her works more thought-provoking. She said: The individual emotions of a female sculptor are richer than a male sculptor since she grows both psychologically and physiologically from a girl to a woman. For example, her emotion would turn from merely happiness into a state of mixed feelings in the teenage period, and then into a stable state as a mature woman. Seeing the girls sculpted by Wu Jiahui is like meeting her at different times, her being a child, a teenager, mature, naive, melancholy, confused... As a woman, the experience of different life stages is all real and personal, and the dual changes of psychology and physiology make her ponder and reflect on her life. These feelings and thinkings are magnified and focused by the female senses and reflected in her works. The artist portrayed the "Shanghai Women" in China in the 1950s and 1960s. Clad in Chinese cheongsam, they were thoughtful, laid-back and charming. Created out of bronze and through thermal coloring, this series of works are very mild-colored and fadeless. Since they are completely free from the single coloration of traditional bronze coloring, they are endowed with a new life. The artist also paid special attention to the selection of colors by creating two different effects, thus increasing the collection value of their works.
